Ten cards are dealt to each player from a standard deck, and the remaining cards are arranged in a draw pile. As they watch their opponent's moves, players alternately draw from the draw or discard pile in an effort to improve their hands. The idea of "knocking" is one of the primary characteristics of Gin Rummy.
