Initially, a predetermined number of cards—usually seven or ten, depending on the number of players—are dealt to each player. One card is positioned face-up to bpenny slotsegin the discard pile, and the other cards form a draw pile. In order to produce legitimate sets or runs, players alternately draw cards from the draw or discard piles. Three or more consecutive cards of the same color make up a run, whereas three or more cards of the same rank but different colors make up a valid set.
