Understanding the basic rules of rummy is necessary before one can enjoy it to the fullest. The game has many variations, but most of them follow the same rules. Each player usually receives a specific number of rummy welthcards, with the remaining cards forming a draw pile. In order to produce legitimate sets or runs, players alternately draw cards from the draw or discard piles. A run is made up of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, whereas a set is made up of three or four cards of the same rank but different suits. The round is over when one player successfully melds all of their cards, at which point the game is over.
