For all-time bracelet leader Phil Hellmuth, it all started with a victory in the 1989 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event, a year before the birth of his son Phillip Hellmuth III. Now at the 2025 WSOP, both Hellmuths are searching for a world championship on Day 2abc of the $10,000 WSOP Main Event as Hellmuth III makes his Main Event debut.

Before he was moved to the feature table, the elder Hellmuth found himself in the back corner of the Horseshoe Ballroom, while his son sat on the other side of the room in the same Blue section. Both are wearing Aria hoodies, but only one is blowing up at his opponents.

"Who Called the Clock?"

After a grand and polarizing Main Event entrance on Day 1b, Hellmuth started the first of the Day 2 flights with 85,000 chips, pipped by his son who had bagged 87,200 on Day 1a.

Hellmuth wasted no time in letting his presence be known, and began building a stack in the first level of the day in a hand captured by PokerNewslive reporter Adam Lamers.

Takahiro Murai opened to 1,600 from early position and was called by two players, including Jimmy Dudley on the button. Hellmuth reraised to 8,000 in the small blind and Murai shoved all in for 66,100. The action folded back to Hellmuth who went into the tank for over three minutes before the clock was called.

"Who called the clock?" Hellmuth questioned right away. Collin Ball put up his hand, only to have Hellmuth question how long he had been thinking for. The Poker Brat eventually made the call and the cards were face up.

The board ran out 10♥9♥2♦J♥J♣and Dudley exclaimed that he folded pocket jacks which would have made quads. However, Hellmuth was the winner of the pot and he took a quick video with Murai before he sent him on his way.

Later in the same level, Hellmuth opened to 1,800 in early position and Junichi Kato three-bet jammed a stack of 10,600 from the small blind. Jose Lesta called in the big blind and Hellmuth also called.

Hellmuth and Lesta checked down the board of K♥K♦3♥10♥8♥and Kato showed K♠6♣to beat out the A♦Q♦of Hellmuth, who was surprisingly calm after losing the three-bet pot. Though he did get stern when demanding change he was owed from earlier in the hand.

"Give me 400 or call the floor. Just give it to me so we don't have to wait," Hellmuth told Kato.

Son of World Champion Making Strong Debut

The younger Hellmuth, meanwhile, hasn't displayed any of his father's trademark antics on Day 2abc, at least not while PokerNewswas around. By first break his stack had grown to 135,000, not far behind his all-time bracelet leader father with 167,200.
